                NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

You see them on telephone poles. You can see them on street signs. You see them in older established neighborhoods and in newer housing tracks. I'm talking about the small but important signs that read, " WELCOME THIS IS A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH COMMUNITY". You may have them in your neighborhood. Do you really know what they mean? Do you practice the important concepts of neighborhood watch?

Neighborhood watch has been around for a long time. Neighborhood watch is a very simple concept that every neighborhood can implement. Neighborhood watch is: 1) knowing your neighbors 2) watching out for each others homes and property 3) reporting suspicious activities to one another and the police. By working together and watching your neighborhood, you and your neighbors can prevent crime. It's easy to get started. Just contact the Webster Police Department's Community Services Office and set up a meeting with a Community Services Officer. The officer will explain how the police department can help you get started and will help you run your first meeting. You can make flyers and pass them out in your neighborhood announcing your first meeting. At your first meeting, the Community Services Officer will talk about neighborhood watch, crime prevention and other related topics. All the neighbors will introduce themselves and relationships will form. After your first meeting, you may want to have follow up meetings or put out a periodic newsletter with neighborhood news. You will also have a contact at the police department that will keep you updated with any crime information that may be affecting your neighborhood. You can then get that information out to your neighbors. The main idea is to work together to know your neighbors, watch out for each other, and work with the police department in order to maintain a safe neighborhood. Neighborhood watch is a great crime prevention tool and a great way to HARDEN YOUR TARGET .
