HARDEN YOUR TARGET

In order for the Webster Police Department to be effective in reducing crime in the Webster Community, we need the cooperation and involvement of the Webster citizens. In this upcoming series we will call, Harden Your Target, we will share some common sense but important crime prevention tips. In order to reduce your risk of being a crime victim, you need to take some time and look at yourself as a "Target". Through this "Risk Assessment", you can make some simple changes in your daily activities that will reduce your risk of being victimized.

We will be discussing common crime prevention steps such as locks, lighting, security systems, neighborhood watch and other crime reducing activities. There are three ingredients for a crime to take place. They are: DESIRE, ABILITY and OPPORTUNITY. As a citizen or business owner, there is little you can do to affect the DESIRE of someone to commit a crime against you. There is also very little you can do to affect the ABILITY of someone to commit a crime against you. The good news is that there a lot one can do to change and reduce the OPPORTUNITY that a suspect will have to commit a crime against you. When we talk about CRIME PREVENTION, we focus on reducing the OPPORTUNITY suspects will have to victimize you. From that comes the phrase, TARGET HARDENING. In upcoming articles I will be discussing specific crime prevention strategies you can use to HARDEN YOUR TARGET.

Always remember to immediately report any suspicious activity to the Webster Police Department by calling 911.
